A local primary school pupil has won a competition to design a banner promoting smoke and vape-free sidelines at junior sports clubs, as part of a campaign delivered by the Bradford City FC Community Foundation and Bradford Metropolitan District Council.

Adelina Fistac, a 10-year-old pupil at Westbourne Primary School in the Manningham ward in Bradford, designed a banner which highlights the benefits of smoke and vape-free junior club sidelines.

Adelina’s design was chosen from hundreds of submissions from schools across Bradford, and will now be displayed at local junior clubs in the city who have pledged to keep their sidelines smoke and vape-free.

Ian Ormondroyd, Foundation CEO, said: “Adelina’s design is fantastic, and brilliantly conveys an important message. We at the Foundation are committed to supporting public health in Bradford, and to ensuring that junior club sidelines are a safe and welcoming place for young people to engage in sport. I would like to thank Adelina for her fantastic contribution, Westbourne Primary School for engaging with our campaign, and Bradford Council for supporting and funding our efforts in ensuring junior sport in Bradford is held at smoke and vape-free facilities.”

Adelina’s banner was given to participating clubs at the Foundation’s recent Smoke and Vape-Free Sidelines Tournament, in which local junior clubs took part in a day of competitive football, and pledged to display the banner at their facilities.

Waqqas Akhtar, Class Teacher at Westbourne Primary School, said: “We at Westbourne are incredibly proud of Adelina and her banner. She has shown brilliant creativity and imagination to promote an important message. Westbourne are immensely grateful to Bradford City FC Community Foundation and Bradford Council for including us in this important project, that is based around keeping our sport facilities smoke and vape-free, which is a message we as a school and the whole Priestley Academy Trust fully endorse.”

Adelina was surprised in a school assembly this week, when the banner was presented to her. City mascot Billy Bantam was in attendance to deliver the banner, and Adelina also received a personalised BCAFC shirt to mark her achievements. In submitting the winning design, Westbourne Primary School also won 200 tickets to the Bantams’ match against Leyton Orient on Saturday 7th March, which will also be the Foundation’s annual Community Takeover Day.
